Virginia Credit Union River City Half offers unique fundraising opportunity

Sports Backers’ inaugural event will offer multiple charities a unique opportunity to fundraise.

RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5k, debuting on March 9, 2024, will be a spectacular event highlighting the scenic beauty of Richmond’s riverfront. Participants will be treated to views and settings beyond the downtown city streets. While Richmond is well known for the river views along only the Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon course in the fall, this event promises all participants spectacular views of the James River and winds through iconic Richmond neighborhoods. See spring awaken along the river and take in all the amazing nature we have in our own backyard. As you can tell, we’re really excited for what’s to come! In fact, we’re so excited that we’ve figured out a way for more partners to be involved.

Traditionally, Sports Backers has only had one charity partner, but we are excited to work together with some of the many outstanding nonprofits in the region to offer a unique way to fundraise. This event will be the first one where Sports Backers will partner with multiples area charities. By allowing multiple charity partners, the Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5k provides an opportunity for a diverse range of causes to benefit from the event, all with ties to active living. This also allows participants to choose a cause that resonates with them personally and has the potential to create a more uplifting race experience. Richmond is a community that feels a lot of pride for the causes they support, and it’s always fun to share the love!

We currently have the following charity partners on board: CARITAS, Greater Richmond SCAN, Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond, Sportable, SOAR365, and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. There is however one catch. All the charity partners are required to become Active RVA-Certified. This means that all the organizations must commit to promoting health and wellness through physical activity within the workplace. We’re thrilled to collaborate and partner with like-minded organizations as we work to emphasize the importance of an active lifestyle. And we hope to learn a thing or two!

“As a longtime partner of Sports Backers promoting children’s health and wellness, Fit4Kids is excited to be a charity partner for this new event,” said Leigh Busby Development Director at Greater Richmond Fit4Kids. “We love promoting fun ways to be active and healthy and this event will also allow participants to explore so much of our beautiful city. We’re looking forward to being part of the Virginia Credit Union River City Half in 2024 and for years to come!”

In addition to experiencing the gorgeous route and crossing the finish line, we hope participants feel more motivated because they have a personal connection to one of our charity partners. Please consider learning more about and supporting these wonderful nonprofits who are doing important work to make the Richmond, Virginia region a fun, vibrant, and inclusive place to live, work, and play. You can join fundraising efforts or donate during the registration process.
