Richmond Celebrates Healthy Kids Day & Walk on April 28

By: Hannah Chapman

For many kids, playing a game of HORSE or biking around the neighborhood has given way to playing video games and surfing the web. Fortunately, it’s not too late to transition our kids into a healthier lifestyle. With a little family encouragement and support from the YMCA of Greater Richmond and Bon Secours Richmond Health System, children will eagerly leave the couch behind for playgrounds and athletic fields.

On Saturday, April 28, the YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kids Day & Walk, a nationwide initiative aimed at improving the health and well-being of kids. More than 1,900 registered YMCAs across the country are taking part in the ‘get fit’ festivities that will feature free community events for families and children of all ages. The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a walk at 12:30 p.m. Four YMCAs in the Richmond area will be participating: Chester, Midlothian, Northside and Shady Grove. From the inflatable obstacle course to Frisbee, there’s an activity designed to get everyone moving. This event is meant to kick start physical activity and learning that will last throughout the summer months.

Participating in physical activity has proven to have a healthy developmental impact on young children. It helps them grow strong bones, maintain a healthy weight and, in many cases, improve their self-confidence. Research suggests that all children should be physically active for at least one hour each day to reap the benefits.

“It’s great seeing a health-based facility team up with a community organization that shares similar values,” said Rachel Bulifant, R.D., a Community Dietician at Bon Secours. “We’re able to reach a broader audience working together.” The two-year partnership has helped strengthen awareness of the event and increase attendance by collaborating with area school systems in Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield. It’s a great opportunity for organizations or individuals who have an interest in improving the health of the community to come together.

For more than 20 years, Healthy Kids Day activities have helped improve the nation’s health as well as strengthen family and community bonds. According to Bulifant, organizers want the lessons from the event to last a lifetime. “Our main goal is to get the entire community to participate in a day of healthy, fun activities that will hopefully transfer into their daily lives.”
