Get Active Group of the Week: Peluso Open Water

Each week, we'll be highlighting a different Active Group from around RVA – this week's group is Peluso Open Water, a swimming and training program geared towards triathletes.

Peluso Open Water, a swimming and training program geared towards triathletes, is a challenging, safe, and fun way to experience Richmond’s James River.

Jay Peluso, the owner and operator of the training club, is a decorated swimmer and triathlon competitor. He leads the training sessions with a smile whether it is in the pool twice a week or out in the open water once a week.

In the open water swim, participants are required to wear brightly colored swim caps and the group looks like a box of crayons floating in the James. The endurance and swift movements of the swimmers are simply breathtaking to witness. Taking place late in the afternoon, the sun is on its way down and the water provides a slight release from the humid summer days. Swimmers can take on the river with confidence as there are kayaks and a stand up paddle board in the water for a little extra support.

Swimmers that want to stay in shape are encouraged to attend the pool sessions, as they provide a far less rigorous workout. Grab the goggles, swim cap and swimsuit to join the group of 40 to 50 members in swimming your way into an active lifestyle.

Peluso's goal is for the training sessions to provide multiple benefits for participants. “It’s all about being challenged, having fun, and getting wet,” he said, before adding one other important piece of advice: “Just keep kicking!”
