Marathon Training Team Coach Q&A: Kevin Barger

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing a Q&A series that features each Sports Backers Marathon Training Team coach in an effort to share more about the Marathon Training Team and the work the coaches put into helping participants reach their goals for the VCU Health Richmond Marathon on November 16. As we get closer to race day, you’ll have the chance to learn about the great things going on within the Marathon Training Team.

Featured Coach: Kevin Barger

What is your favorite thing about MTT?

“The camaraderie of those running.”

How many years have you been with MTT, either as a participant and/or coach? Which team do you coach?

“This is my 16th season with MTT, 14th season as a coach. I coach the Blue Bandits!”

Do you have a favorite memory from your time with MTT?

“Every year on race day – the joy of sharing a first timer’s marathon finish with them.”

What would you say is the biggest benefit that the program provides?

“Knowledgeable runners and coaches that are all accessible.”

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone looking to start training for a marathon?

“Be realistic – it’s hard work that will be downright lousy some days, but the rewards on some days are unmatched.”

Describe a typical weekend group run.

“We meet, talk a little bit for educational information, run together, and socialize after returning to the stadium over ice pops, chocolate milk, or other treats.”

What inspired or encouraged you to become a MTT coach?

“I wanted to be able to help others achieve a goal that may have seemed impossible.”

Do you have a favorite place to run in Richmond?

“I love running along the river.”

How many marathons have you done, and do you have a favorite memory or experience? What was your reason to run your first marathon?

“I have done 44 marathons in 42 states (this doesn’t include when I have run the distance but not in a race). I ran my first in order to prove I could do it. Favorite memory? There are way too many, but the first finish sticks in my mind always.”

What do you like the most about the VCU Health Richmond Marathon?

“The Richmond Marathon is very well organized. I have run in many other states, and I have yet to find one with the support, organization, and course beauty that Richmond has to offer.”
