Sports Backers Kick Off 17th Annual Marathon Training Team on June 2
Richmond, VA – The Sports Backers Marathon Training Team kicks off on Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3, celebrating its 17th year of growth and success as participants prepare for the Anthem Richmond Marathon. As the June 24th deadline to sign up for the training team approaches, the program has already attracted nearly 1,000 participants. Roughly 30 percent of those participants will be training for their first marathon.
The Sports Backers Marathon Training Team is a proven 23-week program that has successfully trained over 15,000 people for the Anthem Richmond Marathon since the team’s inception in 2002. The program is led by head coaches Carrie Parker, Jake Wiseman, and Kevin Burcham, who all have prior experience with the Marathon Training Team and are eager to provide motivation and guidance in a supportive setting to help participants achieve their goal of completing 26.2 miles.
“The team, coaches, and information we received were all amazing and exactly what I was hoping for when I signed up,” said Chris Strauss, a 2017 Marathon Training Team participant. “This was my first year and I knew nobody going in, but I came away with a bunch of new running friends and a lot more knowledge about marathon training and running.”
The Marathon Training Team registration fee of $180 includes a free entry in the Anthem Richmond Marathon, along with a Marathon Training Team shirt, a race shirt, a guide book, clinics, and organized weekly runs with experienced coaches. Runners have the option to participate in group runs on either Saturday or Sunday mornings from Sports Backers Stadium located next to The Diamond. The 41st running of the Anthem Richmond Marathon will take place on Saturday, November 10. It is preceded by the VCU Health 8k and the Markel Richmond Half Marathon. Sports Backers Hosting First-Ever Warehouse Sale on June 2
Taking place in conjunction with the kickoff of the Marathon Training Team at Sports Backers Stadium on June 2, Sports Backers will host the organization’s first-ever warehouse sale, with event apparel and equipment available for sale to the public from 8:00am-12:00pm in the parking lots around The Diamond.
Specific items available include event t-shirts, basketball goals, previously used signage and hardware, technical shirts, hats, holiday decorations, lumber, fire hoses, pint glasses, and gently used office furniture. All proceeds will help serve Sports Backers’ non-profit mission of creating events and programs to inspire active living opportunities for residents in all corners of the Richmond region.
