Sports Backers’ signature spring race continues upward trajectory, welcoming more than 3,000 participants
RICHMOND, VA – The Virginia Credit Union River City Half & River City 5k returned to Richmond on Saturday for its third running — and its third consecutive year of significant growth — firmly establishing itself as one of the region’s premier spring events.
More than 3,000 runners from 33 states and eight countries gathered along Richmond’s scenic riverfront, with over 2,000 participants signing up for the half marathon and 1,087 registering for the 5K. The River City 5K sold out for the third straight year, underscoring the event’s rising demand and growing reputation.
“What we’re seeing in year three is momentum becoming tradition,” said Molly Johnson, Race Director. “Registration has grown each year, enthusiasm has grown each year, and community engagement has grown each year. That kind of steady upward trajectory tells us this event has truly found its place on Richmond’s calendar and beyond. It’s not surprising to anyone who has been out there on race day and witnessed the grit and beauty of the course.”
Starting and finishing at the University of Richmond, which served as the site of the Post-Race Festival, participants experienced a course that showcased the very best of the region. Half marathon runners crossed the Huguenot Bridge, navigated Riverside Drive, Stratford Hills, Westover Hills, the Nickel Bridge, and Windsor Farms — all framed by sweeping views of the James River and early spring landscapes.
The race has quickly built a reputation not only for its challenge, but for its character — blending natural beauty, historic neighborhoods, and Richmond’s unmistakable community spirit.

Brian Flynn of Ashland, VA claimed the men’s half marathon title in 1:10:20, while Julia Siegel Breton from Richmond, VA led the women’s field in 1:23:24.
This year also introduced the inaugural Rally for River City contest, designed to elevate the spectator experience and celebrate Richmond’s signature race-day energy. More than six spirit groups lined the course competing for cash prizes, creating an electric atmosphere for runners. Organizers anticipate the spirited competition will continue to grow in the years ahead.
In their first year partnering with Sports Backers, WRIC ABC 8 News brought additional excitement to the course and start line. From an on-course cheer zone near mile 8 featuring on-air talent to interactive opportunities for runners to share their “why,” the collaboration added a dynamic storytelling element to race day.
As title sponsor for the third consecutive year, Virginia Credit Union reaffirmed its investment in community wellness. In addition to sponsoring, they all had volunteers at a water stop and helped coordinate a group to work the finish line.
“Virginia Credit Union has been proud to support this event since its inception,” said Phil Marine, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Creative Services at Virginia Credit Union. “To witness its growth over the past three years has been incredibly rewarding. Even more inspiring is seeing participants push themselves, reach personal milestones, and celebrate their achievements. Being part of that journey through our sponsorship, team member participation, and volunteer support is something we truly value as an organization.”
The event’s growth extends beyond participation numbers. Runners had the opportunity to support 15 official Charity Partners, including the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter, CARITAS, Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond, James River Association, Sportable, Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, and others. Participants could donate during registration or fundraise on behalf of a chosen nonprofit, collectively raising $7,500.
By blending athletic achievement, scenic splendor, and charitable impact, the Virginia Credit Union River City Half & River City 5k continues to evolve from a promising newcomer into a signature Sports Backers event.
Registration for the 2027 Virginia Credit Union River City Half & River City 5K opens Monday, March 9, with early bird pricing available through March 16 at www.sportsbackers.org. The fourth annual event returns March 6, 2027, poised to build on three years of remarkable growth and deliver an even bigger celebration of Richmond’s riverfront and running community.
