Sports Backers’ newest signature event sees continued success, building off first-year excellence
RICHMOND, VA – The second annual Virginia Credit Union River City Half & 5K made a triumphant return on Saturday, March 8, drawing over 2,700 participants from 30 states, and five countries. With 1,631 runners tackling the half marathon and 1,079 taking on the 5K, the event showcased Richmond’s vibrant running community and scenic landscapes. The River City 5k sold out for the second year in a row.
Brandon Dimitri, of Saint Louis, MO, finished first overall in the half marathon distance with a time of 01:08:56. Elite runner Keira D’Amato claimed victory for the second year in a row on the women’s side with a time of 01:13:56 before co-hosting the Live Show with Ali + Keira, a live podcast recording, alongside national podcast host Ali Feller of Ali on the Run. The event, organized by Sports Backers, attracted runners from across the country, creating an electric atmosphere filled with personal triumphs and community spirit.
From seasoned athletes to first-time racers, participants reveled in a breathtaking course that highlighted Richmond’s natural beauty and historic charm. The University of Richmond hosted the start and finish line and served as site of the Post Race Festival. Half Marathon participants traversed iconic landmarks such as the Huguenot Bridge, Riverside Drive, Stratford Hills, Westover Hills, the Nickel Bridge, and Windsor Farms. With stunning views of the James River, blossoming early spring landscapes, and historic neighborhoods, the course’s picturesque setting played a key role in the event’s growing popularity.
“We are thrilled with the success of the second annual Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5K,” said Molly Johnson, Race Director. “Seeing thousands of runners, volunteers, and supporters come together to celebrate fitness and community is truly inspiring. This event continues to grow, and we’re grateful for everyone who made it such a fantastic experience. We can’t wait to build on this momentum for next year!”

As the event’s title sponsor for the second year, Virginia Credit Union reaffirmed its commitment to community wellness and active living.
“Virginia Credit Union is proud to support the Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5K and to be part of such an incredible community event,” said Phil Marine, Senior Vice President Marketing & Creative Services with Virginia Credit Union. “Seeing participants push their limits and achieve their goals aligns with our mission to empower people to take charge of their personal well-being. We congratulate all the runners and look forward to continuing this partnership for years to come.”
The University of Richmond, which played host to the race start and finish, also celebrated the event’s impact on the local community.
“The Virginia Credit Union River City Half Marathon and 5K is a wonderful new tradition, celebrating the well-being of our community and the beauty of our region,” said University of Richmond President Kevin F. Hallock. “The University of Richmond is proud to partner with Sports Backers on this race, which starts and ends on our breathtaking campus.”
This year’s race also coincided with a historic milestone—the 100th anniversary of the Boulevard Bridge. The Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority marked the occasion with the theme “100 Years on The Boulevard”, featuring encouraging signage and a DJ stationed on the bridge, adding to the event’s festive energy. The Boulevard Bridge has been a vital connection in Richmond for a century, and the Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5k was honored to be a part of the year-long tribute that will be filled with special events, community activities, and historic reflections.
Beyond the race, the event also made a meaningful impact through partnerships with local nonprofits. Runners had the opportunity to support 13 event Charity Partners, including: CARITAS, Friendship Circle, Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, Greater Richmond SCAN, Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond, MedRVA Foundation, Shood, SOAR365, Sportable, SwimRVA, UMFS, Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, and Sports Backers . Participants not only had the option to donate to these groups during registration but could also run as a fundraiser for the organization of their choosing. Over $11,000 was raised for the charities involved.
The excitement continued with a Hardywood Happy Hour at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, followed by a live podcast recording featuring Ali Feller and Keira D’Amato, plus special guests. Looking ahead, registration for the 2026 Virginia Credit Union River City Half & 5K opens on Monday, March 10, with early bird pricing available through March 17 at www.sportsbackers.org. The third annual event is set for March 7, 2026—promising even more excitement, inspiration, and Richmond’s signature hospitality.
