Virginia Credit Union River City Half and 5k Moves to Sunday 

A new finish line inside the University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium, more room to grow, and a Sunday date built for what comes next 

RICHMOND, VA – Sports Backers announced today that the Virginia Credit Union River City Half Marathon and 5k will move to Sunday, March 7, 2027, one day later than its original date. The shift from Saturday to Sunday clears the way for the biggest change in the young race’s history: a finish line inside the University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium, where runners will take the final steps of their half marathon or 5k on the state-of-the-art Fred Hardy Track. 

Heading into its fourth year, the race is growing fast; registration is already double what it was at this point last year. With fewer events competing for space on the University of Richmond campus on Sundays, the new date gives the race smoother course access, an energetic finish festival in and around the stadium, and room to keep expanding for years to come. 

“We’ve watched this race grow every year since we launched it, and Sunday gives us a stage to match that growth,” said Molly Johnson, Race Director. “A Sunday morning on campus means we can host the finish inside the breathtaking Robins Stadium, and that’s a great reflection of how strong our partnership with UR has become. We can’t wait to bring runners into that atmosphere in 2027.” 

In just four years, the Virginia Credit Union River City Half has built a reputation as one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the region; tracing the James River, winding through Richmond’s most scenic neighborhoods, and climbing enough hills to earn real bragging rights. The Virginia Credit Union River City 5k takes on a shorter, faster version of that same route, with the same views and energy. 

Starting in 2027, both distances will finish inside Robins Stadium instead of along Lakeview Lane.

Runners will complete their race on the blue-and-red Fred Hardy Track as friends, family, and fans surround participants, calling out names and cheering runners across the finish line. It’s a stadium finish typically reserved for championship athletes; offered here to every participant, from first-time 5k finishers to half marathoners chasing a new personal best. 

Participants already registered for the 2027 race will be automatically transferred to the new Sunday, March 7 date, and no action is required on their part. Registered participants are also receiving an email today with full details on the shift.
