Popular race coming off a sellout year and pacing toward another strong field
RICHMOND, VA – Sports Backers today announced a new partnership with Capital One, naming the Virginia-based financial services leader as the official title sponsor of the Capital One Richmond 8k. Now in its 19th year, the race is a key event of the Allianz Richmond Marathon weekend on November 14, which also includes the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to community well-being, bringing together two organizations deeply invested in Richmond’s continued growth, connection, and active lifestyle.
“Capital One is proud to partner with Sports Backers and support an event that means so much to the Richmond community,” said Steve Otero, Chief Audit Officer and Central Virginia Market President at Capital One. “The Richmond 8k is an incredible entry point for so many people, whether they’re taking their first steps toward a more active lifestyle or looking to participate in a meaningful experience with their neighbors. At Capital One, we believe financial well-being is a cornerstone of overall wellness, and we’re excited to play a role in such a positive event that brings people together.”

The Capital One Richmond 8k continues to build momentum as one of the most accessible and inclusive races of the weekend. Last year, the event welcomed 5,000 participants and reached capacity alongside both the full and half marathon distances, marking a historic sellout across all three races. Registration trends indicate another strong year ahead.
For many participants, the Capital One Richmond 8k serves as an introduction to race day, offering a welcoming and energetic experience for first-time runners, walkers, and those supporting friends and family competing in longer distances. It is often the first step in a lifelong journey toward health and fitness.
“Welcoming Capital One as the title sponsor of the Richmond 8k is a natural fit in every sense,” said Meghan Keogh, Event Director for the Capital One Richmond 8k. “They’ve been a longtime supporter of our mission, and their investment in this event reflects a genuine commitment to the Richmond community. Together, we’re creating an experience that is approachable, celebratory, and rooted in connection. It’s exactly what this race is all about.”
With a strong presence across the Richmond region, Capital One actively supports opportunities for its associates and their families to engage in volunteerism, wellness initiatives, and community events. The title sponsorship of the Capital One Richmond 8k further strengthens that commitment.
The Capital One Richmond 8k begins at 8th and Broad streets and guides participants through some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods, past the VCU campus, and toward a memorable downhill finish overlooking Brown’s Island and the James River. The course offers an engaging and rewarding experience for participants of all abilities.
Known as “America’s Friendliest Marathon,” the Allianz Richmond Marathon will celebrate its 49th running in 2026. Together with the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon and Capital One Richmond 8k, the event weekend remains one of the region’s most anticipated traditions, drawing participants from all 50 states and countries around the world.
