Sports Backers anticipates CarMax Richmond Half Marathon will also reach capacity

RICHMOND, VA – For the second consecutive year, the Allianz Richmond Marathon 2025 has sold out well ahead of race day–further underscoring its reputation as America’s Friendliest Marathon and as a premier running event. The 48th running takes place on Saturday, November 15, alongside the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon and the VCU Health Richmond 8k.

Last year, the marathon reached capacity in early November, just days before the event. Organizers had predicted a 2025 sellout after announcing record-breaking registration trends earlier this summer, and with the 6,200-participant cap now reached months in advance, attention turns to the CarMax Richmond Half Marathon, which is also expected to sell out ahead of race day, and the VCU Health Richmond 8k, which is on pace to have a record-breaking year.

“The energy and support we see from Richmond is unmatched,” said Meghan Keogh, Race Director of the Allianz Richmond Marathon. “In 2024, we were thrilled by the incredible growth of the event, and on race day we saw our community come alive—neighbors cheering, volunteers smiling, and runners achieving lifelong goals. To see another sellout this year is not just about the numbers—it’s a reflection of Richmond’s spirit and why we proudly call this ‘America’s Friendliest Marathon.’”

Race day is powered by the Richmond community, from thousands of cheering spectators and spirited volunteers to the sponsors and partners who make the event possible. The marathon continues to showcase Richmond as both a premier Boston Qualifier and a celebration of everything that makes the city a vibrant running destination.

Marathon wait list now open

Runners still hoping to take part in the full marathon can join a waiting list. Those on the list will be notified if a spot becomes available and will have to complete their registration in the allotted time. The list will remain open until October 30, the deadline for switching distances and deferrals.
