Beyond the Finish Line: The Impact of a Kids On The move coach

What does it mean to be a Kids On The Move coach? At first glance, the answer may seem simple: it’s about getting kids active and moving. But the role of “coach” goes far beyond physical activity. A Kids On The Move coach becomes a mentor, motivator, and role model – helping kids discover their potential, build self-confidence, and develop a lifelong love of movement. Kids On The Move coaches create a supportive space where every effort and achievement, no matter how small, is celebrated; teamwork is nurtured; and personal growth is prioritized—teaching valuable life skills that extend well beyond the finish line.

Each one of our 150+ coaches bring their unique personality, experiences, and creative energy to their club. Some coaches lead groups that focus on endurance and pacing, while others emphasize fitness-based games and playful movement.

At Lakemont Elementary, Coach Charity Bickcom channels her personal health journey and passion for running to mentor students and inspire a love for fitness. Her coaching style blends goal-setting with celebration—whether it’s awarding milestone medals or hosting pizza parties to reward perseverance and effort. Her approach centers on motivating students to see running as a personal challenge and a path to community connection. Read more about Coach Bickcom’s story here!

At  Old Hundred Elementary School, Coach Ashley Stiebeling takes a playful and inclusive approach to running, focusing on building confidence and creating a fun, welcoming environment. Her coaching style incorporates creative, movement-based games that keep kids engaged, while also preparing them for events like the season-ending Turkey Trot. For Coach Stiebeling, success isn’t about speed but about helping students enjoy the process and discover their own fitness potential. Discover how Coach Stiebeling makes running fun and accessible here!

Despite these differences, all of our coaches share a common coaching philosophy: making fitness fun, ensuring safety, setting goals, utilizing positive reinforcement, promoting inclusivity, and fostering life skills and teamwork. This outlook prioritizes joy in movement, celebrates personal progress over competition, and helps kids develop resilience, good sportsmanship, and a sense of accomplishment—skills they carry with them in all areas of life.
