Sports Backers 2026 Run Club Grant Applications Are Now Open

Supporting local clubs to inspire active lifestyles and strengthen their communities

RICHMOND, VA – Applications are open through September 15 for the second year of Sports Backers’ Run Club Grant Program, designed to fuel the growth and impact of running and walking clubs across the Richmond Region.

Last year was the first year of the Run Club Grant Program, and it quickly made an impact in the community, supporting over 20 local clubs. Along with the funds, groups were also invited to the first-ever Warehouse Day and received exclusive discount codes.

“Richmond doesn’t become one of the fittest cities in the country by accident,” said Will Dixon, Executive Director at Sports Backers. “It happens when people show up for one another all across the region, from run clubs and fitness groups to volunteers on race weekends. When we invest in the people who bring others into an active lifestyle, we build momentum: more people moving, more people finding community, and more people inspiring others to get active. That’s how we build a stronger culture of active living in Richmond.”

Clubs apply for a range of needs. Southside Striders, who run after work through the fall and winter, applied for visibility gear. “Needing to have visibility gear to be safe can be a barrier for people running at this time, especially for newer folks who don’t have gear of their own yet. Having some communal gear would help remove that barrier!” said Sam Jones, a leader with Southside Striders.

The reimbursable grants cover up to $300 per club. Selected groups will receive approval for purchases that support their members, then submit receipts for reimbursement from Sports Backers.

Participating clubs will receive an automatic invitation to Warehouse Day, where 1 – 2 representatives per club can shop Sports Backers’ warehouse for supplies such as Nuun hydration, gels, energy drinks, leftover race swag, and paper products. Sports Backers will share the date for its next Warehouse Day in the coming months.
