ALL Stars

FAQs

what is the all stars program?

The ALL Stars (Active Living Leadership) program is a 10-month long leadership and scholarship program for high school student-athletes during their senior year. The program offers education sessions, mentorship, hands-on service, and leadership development focused on active living.

who is eligible to apply?

Student-athletes must be nominated by a staff member at their school during their junior year. Select nominees will then be invited to apply. Nominations are accepted in the beginning of each calendar year; all local ADs and lead school counselors are notified when the nominations open.

if accepted to the program, what is the time commitment?

Participants will engage in:

  • 5 scheduled educational sessions (approximately 3 hours per session)
  • Crew meet-ups to complete volunteer and experience requirements (hours vary)
  • Working on a capstone project to address a community need (hours vary)
  • Assigned readings or videos to be watched ahead of select sessions

While hours will vary depending on the volunteer and experience opportunities that students select to participate in, it is estimated that each ALL Star student will devote at least 30 hours across the 10 month program to complete the program requirements. The dates of the mandatory sessions are provided in the application so applicants are able to save those dates.

what is a “crew” and how does mentoring work?

Each participant is placed in a crew, which is a group of 4-5 ALL Star student-athletes, that is supported by a mentor. Crews work together throughout the program to support one another’s learning, complete volunteer and participation requirements, as well as to develop and complete their capstone project.

what kinds of topics or content will be covered?

The curriculum is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Identify reasons it is important for scholar-athletes to play a role in active living in their communities.
  • Identify what contributes to and the benefits of an active living community.
  • Connect scholar-athletes to active living organizations and the corporate, government, and non-profit organizations that contribute to an active, vibrant community.
  • Explore and identify active living inequities.
  • Make a direct impact on active living opportunities in our community through volunteerism and completion of a capstone project.
  • Provide mentorship to scholar-athletes to support them throughout the program and during the transition into college.

Award scholarships that scholar-athletes earn through active participation in the program throughout their senior year.

what is the capstone project?

Between February and April, crews, with the support of their mentor, design and implement a project that meets an identified need in the community. This project is intended to apply their learning in a meaningful way that also provides immediate benefit to the community. You can learn more about past capstone projects here.

is there a scholarship or financial incentive?

Yes. Participants who complete the program receive a $2,500 scholarship. Additional awards are available, so some participants receive more than $2,500.

when does the program run?

The program runs throughout students’ senior year. The orientation is typically held the last weekend of August and the program Awards Ceremony is hosted in early May.

are there nominations or application deadlines?

Yes — nominations open and close on specific dates each year. Nominations are generally accepted in the beginning of each calendar year; all local ADs and lead school counselors are notified when the nominations open. Select students will be invited to apply and will be notified of the deadline to submit their application.
