Marathon Training Team Coach Q&A: Susie Leahy

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing a Q&A series that features each Sports Backers Marathon Training Team coach in an effort to share more about the Marathon Training Team and the work the coaches put into helping participants reach their goals for the VCU Health Richmond Marathon on November 16. As we get closer to race day, you’ll have the chance to learn about the great things going on within the Marathon Training Team.

What is your favorite thing about MTT?

“I love the wide variety of people I have met through MTT. I also enjoy the different neighborhoods we run through over the course of the season.”

How many years have you been with MTT, either as a participant and/or coach? Which team do you coach?

“This is my fourth year with MTT, but I have also served as a Sports Backers coach for 10K and the half teams. I am one of the coaches for Sangria.”

Do you have a favorite memory from your time with MTT?

“I don’t have one particular favorite memory. It seems like something positive happens on every weekend run.”

What would you say is the biggest benefit that the program provides?

“It really helps to have friends to run with, especially during hard workouts (like 20-mile runs and hill repeats).”

What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone looking to start training for a marathon?

“Be patient with yourself. Training for a marathon is a process, so don’t overdo it early in the season. Also, listen to your body. Don’t run through serious aches and pains. Cross-training and stretching/pliability work are your friends!”

Describe a typical weekend group run.

“Lots of fun! We run as a large group through the beautiful streets of Richmond. It’s fun to run with our team, but it’s also fun to see other MTT teams out there.”

What inspired or encouraged you to become a MTT coach?

“I think MTT is one of the best options for running we have in Richmond. It’s a wonderful way to stay healthy, socialize and enjoy the company of fun people. I love being a part of it!”

Do you have a favorite place to run in Richmond?

“I actually love running on Riverside Drive – gorgeous neighborhood with views of the river (and a few big hills to keep you honest).”

How many marathons have you done, and do you have a favorite memory or experience? What was your reason to run your first marathon?

“I have run eight marathons. My favorite experience was running Boston in 2008 with my husband, Rick (also an MTT member). We qualified together at the Richmond marathon in 2007 – which is romantic in a runner kind of way. I ran my first marathon (Marine Corps) simply because a few of my friends wanted to try a marathon. We didn’t know how to train for it, but we finished it somehow.”

What do you like most about the VCU Health Richmond Marathon?

“It’s my adopted hometown race! I love the beautiful course and the fact that I see so many friends out there on race day. It feels like a party (and it is when you run through Northside!).”
