Frantz, Traynor Take First In Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k

The 17th annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTIN’S went off this morning with more than 29,400 participants and a distinctly local flavor to the overall men’s and women’s winners. The 10k again hosted the Collegiate Running Association 10k Road Race National Championships, which drew several thousand college athletes to the streets of Richmond to compete for prize money.

Silas Frantz, 22, a Richmond native and graduate of Douglas Freeman High School in Henrico County, took first place with a time of 30:46, followed by Ryan Hagen with a time of 31:04. Frantz, a former NCAA standout at Georgetown University, first participated in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k at age eight and becomes the first Richmond resident to win the race. He is currently a graduate student at the University of Virginia. Hagen is a former indoor track All American at Virginia Tech and is currently enrolled in graduate school at Mary Baldwin, where he studies physical therapy.

Nicol Traynor, 26, of Hoboken, N.J., won her first Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k title in a deep and talented women’s field with a time of 34:01, edging Bethany Sachtleben (34:45). Traynor is a former NCAA All American in the 3k steeplechase at the University of Richmond and is a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier in the event. She currently attends graduate school at Hudson County Community College in Jersey City, N.J.

Although Frantz and Traynor finished atop the standings, leading the pack today was AT&T Dash for the Cash contestant Arvat McClaine, a 49-year-old Richmond resident. McClaine was selected at random from over 19,000 people registered for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k as of February 1, and based on her past race results was given a head start of 2.8 miles. For beating the rest of the field to the finish line, she takes home the $2,500 prize. This is the ninth year in a row that the AT&T Dash for the Cash contestant claimed the prize and the 10th time in the 12 years of the contest overall.

Prize money was also awarded to the top three male and female participants that are Richmond region residents. On the men’s side, Frantz took first place followed by Richard Morris and Matt McKenna.  On the women’s side, Kathryn Harrison, Maria Elena Calle, and Kathleen Lautzenheiser all took home prize money.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe served as the official starter for both races, and more than 35 bands and spirit groups lined the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k course, providing entertainment to participants and spectators.
