YMCA 10k Training Team
January 18 - March 29, 2014

YMCA member or not, training for the March 29 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k with the YMCA 10k Training Team may be just what you need to help you get to the finish line, meet some new running buddies and get motivated to be fit and active. This is a program for all levels of runners and walkers. With help from motivational coaches and teammates, we can work together to conquer 6.2 miles!

Once again this year, we are offering special rates for low-income individuals that would like to take part. Click here for more information and to see if you qualify.

Cost Includes:

  • Entry in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k
  • Ten-week training program (starts on Saturday, January 18) with a detailed written schedule
  • Guidance from experienced coaches
  • Organized weekly group runs/walks
  • A special YMCA 10k Training Team shirt
  • Special clinics on subjects like running shoes and other related topics
  • Non-YMCA members receive a Guest Pass for 10 free YMCA visits during the Training Team period.

 

Entries are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be deferred to another year.

You are welcome to change groups as needed. Unless noted, the group run/walk will start and finish at the facility itself.

Training Levels

Walker – Walking and only walking
Novice Runners – Folks just starting to run; Training includes some run/walk
Intermediate Runners – Those runners currently capable of running 9-12 miles a week

Training Schedule
When you arrive for the first Group Run/Walk on Saturday, January 18, you will receive a training booklet with the complete ten-week training schedule. Every Saturday you will meet at your local YMCA branch at the time noted above. The other days of the week, you will be on your own to follow the training schedule.

Important Information

  • In consideration of the safety of all participants, NO STROLLERS, BABY JOGGERS, ANIMALS ON LEASHES, SKATEBOARDS, SKATES, HANDCYCLES or BICYCLES will be allowed during Group Runs/Walks or on the course during the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k on March 29. This will be strictly enforced.
  • Event registrants grant permission to the Sports Backers to use any photographs, motion pictures, recordings, or any other record of this event for any legitimate purpose.
  • This event is conducted under the rules of USA Track & Field.

Child care available during group runs/walks

Some YMCA branches are able to provide child care (ages 6 weeks to 12 years) during group training walks/runs. For more details, contact the branch where you wish to train or go to www.ymcarichmond.org.

Head coach

Experienced Coach Dan Blankenship leads the YMCA 10k Training Team. His extensive background in running includes finishing 19 marathons, 12 half marathons, and numerous 10k and 5k races. He has an impressive coaching history that includes coaching for the last twelve years on the YMCA 10k Training Team and as head coach for the Sports Backers 8k Training Team. He has also coached the Sports Backers Marathon Training Team and Richmond Road Runners Club. Dan is a certified Level 2 USA Track and Field coach.
