Arvat McClaine Selected for AT&T Dash for the Cash

Arvat McClaine, a Richmond resident, has been selected for an opportunity to win $2,500 on Saturday, April 9, as the AT&T Dash for the Cash participant at the 2016 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTIN’S.

McClaine was chosen at random from over 19,000 people who were registered for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k as of the February 1 contest deadline. Based on the predicted time she listed on her race entry form and her past performance in the event, she will be given a head start on the course and will attempt to cross the finish line before any of the other athletes running in the full 10k (6.2 miles). If she does outrun the rest of the field to the finish line, she will win the $2,500 cash prize. If another runner finishes first, the $2,500 will be donated to the VCU Massey Cancer Center, an official event charity.

ArvatMcClaine2McClaine said she had never dreamed of participating in an event like the AT&T Dash for the Cash. “I’m familiar with it as part of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k and have always thought it was exciting, but never expected that I’d end up taking part in it,” McClaine said. However, once she found out she’d been selected, she said she felt excited to try something new that pushed her out of her comfort zone.

McClaine expects to have plenty of friends and family members supporting her during training and on race day. “They were giddy when they found out I’d been selected, and they think it will be a lot of fun for me,” McClaine said. “Their support will be important because they’ll help make sure I don’t get too stressed while training!”

McClaine said that while she has not started training yet, she plans to work on her speed over the next few weeks to make sure she is ready when race day comes. “I’m going in with the mindset that if I want to run fast in the race, I have to train fast to prepare.”

McClaine participates in numerous running events throughout the year, and has competed in 15+ marathons, including the 2015 Anthem Richmond Marathon this past November. This is her fifth time running in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, and she finished the 2015 event in 1:00:02. “The 10k is a great event and always a lot of fun on race day,” said McClaine, “and now that they give out medals at the end it’s even more fun!”

This is the 12th year of the AT&T Dash for the Cash Contest. In the 11 previous years, the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k has seen the contestant win nine times.

Registration is still open for the 2016 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTIN’S, to be held on April 9, and a total of 30,000 registrants will be accepted. Block Three of registration is currently open with a fee of $40 for adults and $30 for youth age 14 and under. The Virginia529 Kids Run costs $20 through February 29. Registration is available online at www.sportsbackers.org.
